Have you ever wondered what it is about taking a break that seems to solve a lot of problems? Sometimes we feel like we’re going in circles trying to find a solution for hours, days, or weeks. When we finally step away to give ourselves some space, the answer magically appears in our mind. Sometimes we get so caught up in the hustle and grind knocking off our to-do’s, that we lose focus and veer away from our strategy (or have no strategy at all). A bit of distraction-free time will fix that!

Taking a business retreat is an excellent way to rest, relax, renew, and regenerate the spark in both your personal and professional life. Many people opt to take an organized retreat, or you could create a retreat of your own!
DIY retreats are becoming more popular among entrepreneurs and small business owners.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Fernanda and Flavia, the owners of an up-and-coming interior design and real estate staging business called Upstaging Seattle. While marvelously successful, they found that their first year of business was all hustle and left little time for strategy or rest. They decided it was time to hit the brakes and celebrate their accomplishments on their first DIY retreat. They graciously shared all the juicy details about their trip in order to inspire and encourage other female entrepreneurs to take a break, too!
Q: Tell me about your business!
A: Our company is called Upstaging Seattle and we specialize in quick turn-around interior design projects and residential stagings throughout the greater Seattle area.
We are both originally from Brazil but met here in Seattle a few years back. Somehow we always knew we would end up working together on something! Our projects are fast-paced and we have a whole lot of moving parts at any given time and we absolutely LOVE IT!
Q: What made you realize you were ready for a retreat?
A: We started our business a year ago and so much of our year was pure hustling which didn’t give us a whole lot of free time to really strategize and set some specific bench mark goals for our business. At the end of last year we decided that we would always take a week in January to REST and set our intentions for the new year. We have a lot of open conversations about the future of our business and going away from distractions was the perfect backdrop to plan our year!
Q: Where did you decide to go and for how long did you stay?
A: Living in Seattle can be really hard during the gloomy winter months so we knew we wanted to chase some sunshine! We decided on Cabo since it’s a super quick and direct flight from where we live and we ended up going for 4 days!
Q: What did you do on your retreat?
A: We did a lot of goal setting. We talked about our main goal this year, which is to take our business to the next level and truly scale our operations and broke it down into monthly goals that will take us one step closer to our main goal.
There wasn’t a lot of activity planning ahead of time but we did everything we wanted which was to relax, have some awesome meals and explore the city a little bit.
I would say we probably spent about 80% of the time relaxing and 20% of the time working.
Q: What were the biggest impacts of your retreat?
A: Having time to be thankful for all the amazing things we’ve been able to accomplish in one year. It’s so easy to get caught up in this race of comparison and not think that we’re doing enough but it’s important to take time to acknowledge and celebrate your wins as a business owner.
Q: How did you feel when you returned home from your retreat?
A: We not only came back home relaxed but this trip really set the tone for the whole rest of our year as well as gave us clarity on our next steps to take in order to grow our business even more.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share with other business owners who are planning a retreat?
A: I think just talking about an agenda before hand so everyone attending the retreat knows what’s going to happen so there are no surprises.
